Lose weight (relatively) easily....

Lose weight easily......who doesn't like the sound of these overly sweet words!!!

Many of us are fascinated by the "magical" weight loss regimes that guarantee weight loss in big numbers in a short period of time. Having tried many of the "fad regimes" myself and having failed at them, I have learned and confirmed the oft said quote " Nothing comes without hard work!" . This "lesson" has prompted me to go back to basics i.e., our good old physical work.

Stair climbing is a great way to start losing weight and keeping those extra kilos off our body.
Use the stairs instead of using lifts/elevators or escalators.

Benefits of climbing up the staircase :
  • Stairs are easily available and free of cost.
  • Stair climbing raises heart beat faster and keeps it sustained guaranteeing aerobic benefits.
  • Our body moves against gravity => more workout => more calories burnt => weight loss
  • It tones the lower body and strengthens the core.
  • Can be done at any time.
  • It provides relatively low impact on the knees if the correct technique is used - video links to the correct technique posted below.)
  • Once you are accustomed to climbing stairs easily, try doing it for 10 minutes straight and watch all the flab disappear.
  • We can always challenge ourselves by increasing time and speed.

Precautions to be taken :

  1. Always consult your health adviser before starting any new exercise programme.
  2. Follow the proper technique in order to not hurt yourself.
  3. Stay well hydrated.
  4. Always listen to your body and do not rush to climb too many stairs on day one. Give the body as much time as it needs to cope up with any new activity.
  5. Never run down the stairs as it may result in unwanted injuries further delaying your weight loss goals.
  6. Wear proper footwear and exercise in a well lit area.

So, dear friends, start climbing stairs and welcome a fit and a healthier life...

Today's Health Tips

Want to lose those extra pounds?

1. Get on the weighing machine and take a look at your pounds! This will be very difficult on day 1 but believe me, this is what keeps you motivated to lose weight.
Make it a point to enter your weekly weight in a log book to keep track of those shedding pounds.
And remember, the healthy way to lose weight is to shed not more than 2 pounds or 1 kg per week.

2. It is normal to be enthusiastic on day 1 of the workout. But it is always wise to listen to the body and to treat it with respect.
Don't push your body too much on the first day itself. Give it time to adjust to the increased activity that has been imposed on it.
Finally, an individual requires 30 minutes of physical activity for atleast 5 days a week to stay
healthy.

3. Keep yourself well hydrated.
"adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day." according to Mayo clinic. ( http://www.mayoclinic.org/water/ART-20044256 )

4. Eat adequate food. Use a calorie counter (available as very good apps on mobile devices) and have foods that are high in protein, fiber and low in trans fats and saturated fats.
Have healthy snack options like fruits, a couple of nuts, popcorn etc....
Replace carbonated drinks which contain high amounts of sugar with flavored water and unsweetened fruit juices atleast once a day.

5.Limit alcohol intake. As we all know alcohol has huge amounts of "empty calories", true to their name, they get stored as fat in our body and do us more harm than good. And there has been enough said about how alcohol adversely affects the liver and brain.
